Yes. If your job made you sick from the heat, California workers' comp pays your medical care, your lost wages, and any lasting damage.
Heat got to you at work. Maybe you went dizzy out in the field. Maybe you collapsed by a hot oven or in a stuffy warehouse. You are scared. Your body still feels off. Take a breath. You have real rights. Using them costs you nothing up front.
A heat injury from work is covered, just like a broken arm. You can get every doctor visit paid. You can get two-thirds of your wages while you heal. Did the heat harm your heart or kidneys for good? You can get a cash award too.
It does not matter if you work in a field, a kitchen, or a warehouse. It does not matter where you were born. The rules protect you the same. We handle the paperwork and the fight. You focus on getting better.
Heat illness is any sickness the heat causes on the job. It runs from mild heat cramps to deadly heat stroke.
Heat illness is not one thing. It is a range. It can start small, with cramps and dizziness. It can end in a medical emergency. Knowing the signs can save your life. It also helps your claim.
Some workers face more danger than others. New workers are at high risk in their first week. So are older workers and anyone on certain medicines. The body needs time to get used to the heat.
Heat exhaustion is the warning stage. Heat stroke is the dangerous stage. Here is how they differ.

Do not push through these signs. Heat stroke can turn deadly in minutes. It can also harm your organs for life. If a coworker looks confused or faints in the heat, call 911.
Your employer must give you cool water, shade, and paid rest breaks. California's safety agency, Cal/OSHA, sets these rules for outdoor and indoor jobs.
California makes your employer keep you safe in the heat. The rules are clear. When they get broken, workers get hurt.
For outdoor work, the rule is California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3395. It covers fields, construction sites, and loading docks. For indoor spots like warehouses and hot kitchens, a newer state rule began in 2024. It works much the same way.

When it gets really hot, the rules get stricter. At 95 degrees, outdoor jobs like farm work and construction must add steps. That means a closer watch on workers. It means water reminders and a buddy system. If your job ignored these high-heat rules, that matters for your claim.

It pays all your medical care and two-thirds of your lost wages. To prove it, report fast and tie the illness to your job.
Heat claims can be a fight. The insurer may say you were just dehydrated at home. Or they may blame a health problem you already had. So your proof matters.
Three steps build a strong claim. Tell your boss right away. Get medical care the same day. Make sure the record says work caused it. Report the injury within 30 days, and file your claim within one year.
Coworkers can help your case. A buddy who saw you go down is strong proof. Get names if you can.
The law helps you here too. The insurer has 90 days to accept or deny your claim under Labor Code 5402. Miss that window, and your injury is presumed covered. During those 90 days, you still get up to $10,000 in care.
First, your medical care. All of it is covered under Labor Code 4600. That means the ambulance, the ER, IV fluids, lab work, and follow-up visits. You pay no copay and no deductible.
Emergency care is covered right away, even before your claim is approved. Do not let anyone tell you to wait. You also get paid back for travel to your doctor visits. Keep your mileage and receipts.
Next, your lost wages. While a doctor keeps you off work, you get temporary disability pay. That is two-thirds of your average weekly wage. It can run up to 104 weeks under Labor Code 4656.

Your first check is due within 14 days. If it comes late, the insurer owes a 10% penalty on top.
Severe heat stroke can damage your heart, kidneys, or brain for life. You can get a permanent cash award for that lasting harm.
Heat stroke is the most dangerous kind. Your body cannot cool itself. Your core gets dangerously hot. This can hurt your organs for good.
Some workers never fully recover. The heat can scar the kidneys. It can strain the heart. In bad cases it harms the brain. When the damage lasts, you get a permanent disability award.

These are the state's top amounts. Your own award depends on your case.

The insurer may fight a lasting-harm claim hard. A common move is to blame your health, not the heat. They may point to high blood pressure or an old heart problem. This is called apportionment, set by Labor Code 4663.
